Session First-Time Manager Leading the Team

Coaching Your Team Through Problems and Decisions

September 2, 2026, 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM Canyon A

One of the hardest shifts for lab leaders is recognizing that solving every problem yourself is no longer always the best answer. Sometimes the team needs a leader to step in; provide direction; and help move the work forward. Other times; the better choice is to step back; ask the right questions; and give someone else the opportunity to work through the problem.
This session will address how leaders can decide when to act as the “player” and when to take on the role of “coach.” Attendees will learn how to assess the situation; the employee’s experience; and the potential consequences of getting it wrong before deciding how involved to become. The session will also address the discomfort that can come with giving up control; allowing team members to make mistakes; and treating those mistakes as part of their development. Through practical examples; attendees will learn how to create growth opportunities while still providing the support and accountability their teams need.
Key learnings
Recognize when a problem requires direct leader involvement versus an opportunity for an employee to work toward the solution
Assess factors such as risk; urgency; employee experience; and potential consequences when deciding how much support to provide
Use questions; guidance; and feedback to help employees strengthen their own problem-solving skills
Create opportunities for team members to take on new challenges; build confidence; and learn through experience
Respond to mistakes in ways that reinforce learning while maintaining appropriate accountability
Become more comfortable stepping back without becoming disconnected from the work or the team
